He studied at the \u00c9cole des Beaux-Arts in Bourges and then in Paris. After stays in Spain in 1927 and in Morocco in 1928, he won the Prix de Rome and spent three years at the Villa Medici from 1930 to 1934.<br\/>After his Spanish black period, then his Italian ochre and red period, he broadened his palette by introducing greens, pale yellows and a few blues. Although Provence and the Camargue remained his home bases, he was strongly drawn to Mediterranean landscapes. He returned regularly to work in his favourite countries: Italy and Spain, as well as Portugal and the Canary Islands. His thirst for discovery and travel led him to visit Greece, Egypt, Iran, Israel and other continents such as Mexico, the United States, Japan and Russia. A tireless draughtsman, he never went anywhere without sketchbooks of various sizes, bearing witness to the landscapes and atmospheres he passed through. His drawings from the day were immediately worked up in watercolour in the evening on arriving at the hotel, using the fresh colours still in his memory.       <br\/><br\/>He died in 1990 and is buried in Les Baux-de-Provence, where the Mus\u00e9e Yves Brayer was inaugurated in 1991.<br\/>His work is held in various museums and in many collections, both in France and abroad. He was a professor at the Acad\u00e9mie de la Grande Chaumi\u00e8re, President of the Salon d\u2019Automne and, as a member of the Acad\u00e9mie des Beaux-Arts, curator of the Marmottan-Claude Monet Museum in Paris. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A doctor by training and a renowned explorer, Jean-Louis \u00c9tienne was the first man to reach the North Pole solo in 1986 and to complete the first full crossing of Antarctica in 1989-1990. A tireless defender of the planet, his many educational and scientific expeditions aim to raise awareness of the polar regions and to understand the role they play in life and the Earth\u2019s climate. His love of great adventures will take him in 2025 to the Southern Ocean for an unprecedented exploration aboard the Polar Pod oceanographic platform.
